Do you need anesthetic to get a crown after a root canal?

The tooth itself shouldn't hurt because, when they did the root canal on it, they removed the nerve. However, when they prepare the tooth for the crown, they need to retract your gums around the tooth so they'll be jamming cord and instruments around your tooth underneath the gums. This will be quite uncomfortable if your gums aren't frozen.
