Can I get out of Jury Duty?

I live in Wheeling, WV with my boyfriend and am in Maryland now visiting my Mother. My boyfriend and I literatley yesterday booked and payed for my ticket back to Wheeling for the 16th of July. Today? I recieve a Summons for Jury Duty for the 17th of July. The ticket is NON REFUNDABLE. And it wasn't cheap. I know you have to respond back in 10 days or you get in trouble but I can't do the Jury Duty. Everyone is telling me if I call them and show them that I have in fact paid for a ticket already they can excuse me from it. Is this true?
